Limassol stretches for miles along the coast, with quiet villages in the hills behind it. Where you choose to live will shape your day-to-day life more than almost anything else. Here is how the main areas compare for retirees – a starting point for your viewing trip.
Central seafront and the Old Town
For people who want everything within walking distance: the seafront promenade, the marina, restaurants, theatres and the historic Old Town around the castle. Apartments are the most expensive here and parking can be tight, but you may not need a car at all.
Best for: sociable city lovers who want culture and convenience.
Germasogeia and the tourist area
Just east of the centre, Germasogeia and the tourist strip combine beaches, cafés and hotels with established residential streets on the slopes above. Lively in summer, friendly in winter and still close to the city.
Best for: beach walkers who want amenities on the doorstep.
The east coast towards Pyrgos
Further east, towards Agios Tychonas, Mouttagiaka, Parekklisia and Pyrgos, the coast is calmer, with newer developments, quieter beaches and quick motorway access to the city and to Larnaca airport.
Best for: a slower pace by the sea, without being cut off.
West of the city: Ypsonas, Erimi and the Kourion coast
West of Limassol, around Ypsonas and Erimi, prices are more moderate and many homes have gardens. The dramatic coastline at Kourion, with its ancient theatre and long beaches, is a short drive away.
Best for: more space for the money, and nature lovers.
Hillside villages
Inland – in the hills just behind the city and the wine villages towards the Troodos mountains – you will find stone houses, cooler summer evenings, open views and a slower pace.
Best for: peace, gardens and village life – if you are happy to drive.
Questions to ask before you choose
- How far is the nearest GP, pharmacy and hospital?
- Will you still be happy driving there in 10 or 15 years?
- Is the area busy only in summer, or alive all year?
- Are there other English speakers nearby?
- Is the home step-free, with a lift if it is an apartment?
